 Brutal truth about attacks

Brutal truth about attacks

ANOTHER bashing of an Indian student, another angry demonstration by fed-up Indian residents, another brick in the wall of the misconception that Indians in this country have become the frequent victims of violent white racism.

This misconception has hardened into belief in India, where widespread media coverage of the attacks has played on old sensitivities about the treatment of Indians by whites and white Australia.

The perception is wrong. Indian students are being attacked in Australia, with at least 100 incidents in Melbourne and Sydney during the past year. The violence is undeniable, the targeting of Indians is undeniable, and the problem is unacceptable and embarrassing.

But the distorted story of white racism has been helped along by the prevailing sensibilities of reporting of crime in Australia, with skittishness about detailing the gritty reality that most violent street crime in Sydney and Melbourne is not committed by whites. The prison populations confirm this.

The attacks on Indians have followed this pattern, with the crimes committed by a polyglot mix reflecting the streets - white, Asian, Middle Eastern, Aboriginal, Pacific Islander.

The most recent attacks, in Harris Park this week, allegedly involved assailants of the proverbial "Middle Eastern appearance". The assault on Monday night was followed by a retaliatory attack by a big group of Indians. Police said three men "of Middle Eastern appearance" were set upon in Harris Park after about 200 Indian men converged on the street after hearing of the latest attack. In Melbourne, an assault on an Indian student on a train was recorded on video and footage depicting the attack was posted on YouTube. The video shows a swarm of young men robbing and repeatedly attacking the student. Most of them do not appear to be white.

A recent assault on an Indian student in Glebe was committed by a young offender described as Aboriginal. Sydney University is bounded on the east and west by Glebe and Redfern and both have crime hot spots involving Aboriginal communities.

Another recent assault on an Indian student, by a knife-wielding assailant in Port Melbourne, involved three attackers identified as Caucasian.

The ethnicity of the attackers thus varies from crime to crime. The police are telling the truth when they describe the attacks as largely motivated by opportunism, because Indian students work late at night, live in lower-cost neighbourhoods, and are regarded as soft targets.

It is also true that Indians have been targeted, hence the demonstration by about 1000 Indian students in Melbourne 10 days ago, and this week's eruption by hundreds of Indian men in Harris Park, which has Sydney's largest concentration of Indian residents. The suburb has experienced a spate of attacks on Indians in recent months.

I am in China working, it is a safe place no threats or violence towards mme because I am not chinese....what is wrong with the english speaking countries that we have to bash foreigners?... I know that there are many problems ...maybe not all racially motivated... but ..seriously... bashing people?... I am treated with a great deal of respect here. Maybe australia and a few other countries could take a leaf out of the chinese handbook of how to treat guests.....we (english speaking) truly are "barbarians" it is quite saddening

I dont know why you hold the view that it is not against indian students but opportunistic crime. How blind can you be in your views when clearly the CCTV footage shows attackers are white. Ayway does your opinion that crime is committed by other ethnic minorities not racist? That implies Australians of other ethnic background than whites are the criminals. I am baffled by you including Aboriinals in your list. They are the original people of the continent- you never integrated into their culture but you anhilated them. And now u ask people to integrate in your culture otherwuse leave. What double standards. Anyway you should not try to justify that whites are the avatar of God who cant do no wrong.

Great article, it is important to note that not all these attacks have been committed by white Australians, this gives a distorted view that Australia is still a "racist" country.

What is going on? Australia was never like this. We ived as an anglo Indian family (not from India) in NSW for years with no problem. Is this comng from the yobs from abroad who are allowed in? some bring their predjudice with them. Oz was always a fair go society. Indian looking people are not always from India. Get the hoons off of our streets and if they came from overseas , send them home!

At the risk of being labled a racist, I have to agree with the stupidity of the discrimination laws in this country the result of which obviously is a deterrent for free description of any offenders be they black, white or brindle. A few years ago I was employed as a Security Officer at Southbank in Brisbane, while on duty I and my fellows Security Officers were not allowed to refer to any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders by the afore mentioned titles but had to call them I.P's (short for Indiginous Peoples ). Was this the dream that our past Polititons held for a "multicultural" Australia? a land where everyone is afraid to call someone by their place of origin??? the mind boggles at the loss of freedom that this form of censorship may lead to. We already have the problem of offenders that are brought before the courts in this country being given a slap on the wrist because they come from a "deprived" background or childhood, what next... a lenient suspended sentence for bashing some poor old Pensioner because your parents came from Lebanon or the Sudan or Nigeria?

Is it relevant what race the attackers happen to be? The fact is that guests from another country are being attacked by Australians, white or otherwise.

The only racism here is reverse racism it's always white Australians causing the trouble isn't it what a joke. Have a go at the gangs causing trouble in Australia most if not all are people or sons & daughters of people that we as Australians invited into this once fine country. And as for the person who commented about China, well we all now what would happen if you caused the slightest trouble in China. Maybe we can take a leaf out of their book and line these gangs up against a wall hey?

I agree with Mary b's comments . A lot of trouble is escalated with others bringing their problems into Australia. If they want to carry on like this send them home.

Here we go again – I am so over people using any incident as an excuse to have a riot or form vigilante groups. Do unto others as they would do unto you is the only thing these people understand. Let the police do their jobs and send letters to your local government if you’re not happy, as a group you have the power to do something in a non violent way not run around in packs being the thugs you accuse everyone else of being if you don’t get the outcome you are looking for. I grew up seeing footage from other countries on the news with riots and bombings and fanatical behaviour and always thought how lucky we were not to have a society that deals with problems in this way. I have no respect for any of these people as these groups of people are going to be seen as representatives for the whole race that they come from not the minority that they are. This is not just Indians/Middle Eastern protesting these people are nothing but trouble makers looking for a reason to beat up on anyone they perceive as being against them. I so hate living in this ethnic hotpot we now call Australia and alas I have nowhere else to go as my family has been here since Australia started. Things are only going to get worse – the day will come when terrorism in the vilest forms will hit our shores.
