Description:
Murray Grey cattle are the Feature Breed to be shown at Hamilton’s Beef Expo on Thursday 9th February.

Murray Greys are a major force in the domestic and international beef industry. They have been bred in the Western District for over 50 years.

Another top line of Murray Grey stud stock is set to be exhibited, where members of the Western Victorian Murray Grey Breeders group will host fellow exhibitors with strong enquiries received from around Victoria and South Australia.

Cattle judging takes place from midday on Thursday at the Hamilton Showgrounds. This is an ideal opportunity for cattle breeders to assess an exceptional line up of Murray Greys from a selection of top line genetics. The Bulls and Females on display will illustrate and affirm herd breeding direction and genetic progress. They reflect the Murray Grey standard of excellence in breeding stock available for all cattle producers.

The success of the breed at a national level in Showing and Carcase Competitions is legendary. Each year local Commercial and Stud breeders dominate in steer carcase development, achieving outstanding results in Domestic Carcase competitions including ongoing success at Hamilton Beef Expo.

Murray Greys are used Australia widely in crossbreeding programs over European, Bos Indicus and other British breeds of cattle. The Murray Grey attributes of easy calving, docility, marbling, fertility and carcase quality are all evident in cross bred progeny. Murray Greys tick all the boxes, making them the ideal choice for the commercial cattle breeder.

The Murray Grey Beef Cattle Society celebrates its 50th year in 2012. Victorian Board representative Howard Woodall reflected on the progress of the breed and its members during that time.

“The Murray Grey Beef Cattle Society was formed in the early 1960’s to register the cattle and to administer the breed, following successful breeding programs from a number of progressive Murray Grey Breeders.

The advent of the Society was the signal for growth and development of this great Australian breed of cattle which is unparalleled in Australia and perhaps the world in the 20th century.”

The birthplace of Murray Grey cattle was in the early 1900s in the upper Murray Valley on the New South Wales/Victorian border. Our National Show and Sale is held each year at Wodonga, near the birthplace of the foundation herd.

The breed has spread throughout Australia and to New Zealand, Asia, North America and Europe.

Supermarkets and butchers prefer Murray Grey beef as its consistent quality and tenderness can be relied upon. Murray Grey Carcases provide the "right sized" serves for today's family home meal and for the restaurant trade.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see an Australian Made Breed presented to the public.
