Apsley man charged with Goroke murder

15 Feb, 2012 08:36 AM
An Apsley man has been charged with murder after a Goroke woman was shot dead on Sunday night.

Michael Kelly, 47, faced Horsham Magistrate's Court yesterday on one count of murder after he was arrested on Monday.

The court heard Kelly drove to Goroke with a loaded rifle, firing a shot into the window of the Barrack Street house of Peter Brown at 10.10pm Sunday.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Kevin Taggert said Kelly then kicked open the back door, shooting Julie-Ann Rogers before chasing Mr Brown into the street, firing more shots before fleeing.

Emergency services tried to revive Mrs Rogers but she died at the scene.

Homicide Squad detectives searched the property on Monday, as well as Kelly's Apsley house.

Kelly, wearing a black T-shirt, black pants and thongs, did not apply for bail.

Defence solicitor Julia Barling told Magistrate Richard Pithouse that Kelly suffered a range of health problems, including depression.

Kelly was remanded in custody to appear at Horsham Magistrate's Court for a committal mention on June 13.
