Award weekend a success

05 Oct, 2009 08:31 AM
HORSHAM has succesfully hosted the Victorian 2009 Sustainable Communities-Tidy Towns Awards weekend.

Horsham welcomed more than 150 people from across Victoria for the weekend, with 38 towns vyeing for awards across 10 categories, including the Overall Sustainable Communities-Tidy Towns Award.

The awards were announced at a gala presentation night at Horsham Sports and Community Club.

Beechworth was crowned Victoria's tidiest town.

The honour went to Horsham last year.

Horsham was nominated in eight categories and finished with a judge's commendation award in the Water Conservation Award, for GWMWater's water conference for year nine and 10 students.

Dimboola, Rainbow, Sea Lake and Stuart Mill were nominated for awards but missed out.

Horsham Tidy Towns committee chairman Don Johns said the weekend was a resounding success.

"It was excellent," Mr Johns said.

"It was a great weekend and we are very pleased with everything. Everything went perfectly."

The weekend involved a civic reception hosted by Horsham Mayor Bernard Gross and councillors at Horsham Regional Art Gallery on Friday, a workshop on Saturday morning before the presentation night at Horsham Sports and Community Club.

A farewell breakfast provided by Horsham East Rotary Club at Horsham Angling Club rooms ended the awards weekend yesterday morning.

Mr Johns said the food provided by Horsham Sports and Community Club and Horsham East Rotary Club was first-rate, while the hospitality of the entire city gave visiting delegates a wonderful experience.

"The people were thrilled with Horsham, they absolutely thought it was fantastic," he said.

"It was great promotion for Horsham."

Television travel show personality Geoff `Coxy' Cox, of Coxy's Big Break hosted the presentation night.

Mr Johns said `Coxy' added some colour to the evening.

"Coxy was excellent, he kept things flowing and gave a lot of humour," he said.

Mr Johns said the Horsham Tidy Towns committee extended their best wishes to Beechworth for the national awards.
