A FESTIVAL of Lights in Horsham to celebrate Diwali, the Indian new year, attracted more than 1000 people to Sawyer Park on Saturday night.
Wimmera Southern Mallee Skilled Migration Program's Janet Heard and Abby Cooper organised the festival.
"It was beyond our wildest expectations," Ms Cooper said.
Ms Cooper said Sawyer Park was full of people of all ages enjoying the Indian culture.
"It was a real family event," she said.
Ms Cooper said there were long lines stretching across the park to try some of the Indian cuisine.
"The food vans only had plastic cups remaining when they left," she said.
She said a Bollywood dance workshop run by professional dancers from Melbourne and performances from district children were highlights of the festival.
Ms Cooper said the support for the event meant a lot to the Wimmera's Indian community.
"They thought it was wonderful and felt so supported," she said.
"It really cemented the Wimmera as a place they can call home."
She said the success of the festival created an opportunity for more Wimmera cultural events.
Ms Cooper thanked sponsors for supporting the event and made special mention of Daniel Taylor for his lighting and fireworks display.
"It was one of the best displays I've seen in a long time and really topped off the night," she said.
Asawari Tokekar, who moved to Horsham from India last year, said it was fantastic to share Indian culture with the Wimmera.
"It was awesome. I couldn't choose a highlight because it was all good," she said.
