THE Wimmera and Mallee is in the midst of a record heat wave for November.
Hopetoun has already experienced four consecutive days above 35 degrees while Horsham has experienced two and Bureau of Meteorology forecasters have predicted another four consecutive days of 35 degrees or above across the region.
Victorian climate meteorologist Harvey Stern said the heat wave would break at least a 10-year record for the month of November if the predicted weather pattern eventuated.
Dr Stern said detailed records documenting heat waves had only been kept for 10 years.
Longerenong weather observer Brett Allender said the heat wave was caused by a blocking high-pressure system over the Tasman Sea.
Mr Allender said the weather pattern was more regular in summer than at this time of year.
"It is a little unusual to see a string of hot days like this so early in November," he said.
"Quite often late in November we have some hot spells, just not this early."
Mr Allender said a similar heat wave hit the Wimmera in mid-November 2007, when the region experienced eight days above 30 degrees before a four-day heat wave at the end of the month.
He said a cold front was likely to push through on Sunday, bringing temperatures down into the mid to high 20s by next week.
"Hopefully we will see a little bit of rain with it too," he said. "Quite often these highs break with a thunderstorm."
