THE State Government has granted an additional $342,000 to continue improvement works in Horsham North.
Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford announced the funding on behalf of Minister for Housing Richard Wynne at a community brunch in Horsham North on Friday.
She said $250,000 would be used to continue the Horsham Immediate Improvement Program, $72,000 would secure the Horsham Community Action Centre employment and learning co-ordinator position for another 12 months and $20,000 would support more job opportunities.
"This marks another milestone in the development of this community," she said.
"It is fabulous to see the change previous funding has made so far in fabulous community programs such as the community garden and the new playground."
Friday's announcement follows a total of more than $1.8 million in State Government grants awarded to the education, employment and improvement projects since May last year.
Horsham Immediate Improvement Project co- ordinator Bill Schmidt said previous grants had funded fencing and landscaping of 44 Office of Housing properties in Horsham North.
Mr Schmidt said the program started with one supervisor and three full-time and two job-share staff but now employed two supervisors and eight staff.
"We are pleased to be able to give people an opportunity to gain work skills as well as provide training which they can use in the future," he said. "The funding was due to run out in December so we are pleased to see it continue."
Project worker Aaron Jones said the funding announcement had given him job security. "I have a family to support so it is good," he said. "We've been working since January and I'm hoping this will get us at least another six months of work."
Ms Pulford said 13 people had received training, 11 had found work and one had received a study scholarship with the help of the employment and learning co-ordinator, who was also working to develop a youth committee.
Co-ordinator Tony Lindsay said continued funding of his position would allow him to develop networks with the Horsham business community to secure long-term work for unemployed people.
Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty welcomed the money. "I have been part of the committee working on this worthwhile project and it is great to see people taking pride in the area," he said.
