A MAJOR 148-kilometre walk extending the length of the Grampians will include four loop tracks and 10 new hiker camps.
Parks Victoria will meet Horsham Rural City Council management today to encourage the council's support for stage one of the Grampians Long Distance Walk, between Mt Zero and Halls Gap.
The walk is one of four walks identified in Victoria's Nature-Based Tourism Strategy, with others including a Great Alpine Walk, Great Ocean Walk and Croajingolong National Park in East Gippsland.
Parks Victoria leaders hope the walk will encourage tourism opportunities, in the form of accommodation and guided tours.
The council's corporate services and economic development manager Tony Bawden said Parks Victoria wanted to apply for a Federal Government regional community infrastructure grant for stage one of the project, expected to cost $3.1 million.
Mr Bawden said Parks Victoria already had the support of Northern Grampians Shire Council.
"I believe the project will have significant tourism and economic benefit for our region and municipality while also having positive environmental benefits for this iconic park," he said.
Mr Bawden said Parks Victoria was well-advanced in the scoping, route design and costing of the walk.
The walk, expected to take about 14 days to complete in its entirety, will also include toilets at the hiker camps.
At last week's council meeting Cr Mark Radford said news of the walk was `just so exciting'.
Cr Radford said the walk would compare with the Great Alpine and Great Ocean walks.
"These long walks are a great opportunity and an extra reason to visit our region," he said.
"Long distances walks like this open up a new attraction for a new type of tourist."
Cr Radford said walking was the best way to see the country.
