Horsham Golf Club celebrates new chapter

23 Jan, 2012 08:45 AM
HORSHAM Golf Club celebrated the start of a new chapter yesterday.

A sod turning ceremony marked the first step towards rebuilding the golf course's clubhouse which was razed in the Black Saturday bushfires.

Construction of the $4.5-millon clubhouse is expected to begin at the end of the month.

Club president Iain McNee said it was an exciting moment for the club and its members.

"It is more about symbolism than anything else but it's fantastic," Mr McNee said. "We are now underway. An iconic building will be built in the next 12 months and there will be work on the course. We'll get back to where we were pre-fire."

Mr McNee said Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty spoke at the ceremony.

Mr McNee said $1 millon in State Government funding was much-needed.

"If we hadn't got that we wouldn't be here today," Mr McNee said.
