The St Mary's Primary School Warracknabeal teacher will compete at the Australian National Rubik's Cube Competition in Melbourne at the weekend.
Mr Holmes-Brown said he was entered in three categories, the 3x3 Rubik's Cube, Rubik's Magic and Rubik's Master Magic.
"My times aren't quite up to world standard, but my personal best is one minute, 19.96 seconds," he said.
"As part of the speed cubing competition there will be really good competitors completing a cube in 30 seconds."
Mr Holmes-Brown said there were no age restrictions for competitors.
"The current world record holder is an Australian who can complete a cube in six seconds - and he is in primary school."
Mr Holmes-Brown said he got his first Rubik's Magic in 1986, but only bought his first Rubik's Cube a year ago.
A Rubik's Magic, like the Rubik's Cube, is a mechanical puzzle, but has three square tiles with separate, rainbow-coloured rings, and a scrambled picture of three interconnected rings.
Mr Holmes-Brown said he rediscovered his Rubik's Magic in a childhood box of trinkets at his mother's Ararat home and then bought a Rubik's Cube.
"I became addicted to the Magic again; when I was a kid I could do it in 15 seconds," he said.
"I now own well over 50 cubes of all different shapes and sizes and always have one in my pocket."
Mr Holmes-Brown said he was interested in hearing from any Wimmera cubers and asked people to email him at jhb12978@yahoo.com.au.
