WIMMERA Drug Action Taskforce has a new chairwoman.
Janine Harfield took over from previous chairman Brendan Scale in December.
Mr Scale remains strongly involved as taskforce project worker.
Ms Harfield, who joined the committee mid last year, said the taskforce had many challenges ahead this year.
"Our first meeting for the year was about planning where we'd like to go," she said.
"One of our first key focuses for the year will be the Horsham Fishing Competition in March.
"We will distribute flyers about the harms of alcohol and will be reminding campers and competitors during the competition about alcohol messages including not drink driving and setting a limit when drinking to minimise risks to self and others."
Ms Harfield said the taskforce would also organise parent education evenings during Drug Action Week from June 17 to 23.
"Another focus for us will be Dry July and ensuring that people are celebrating safely during footy finals, spring racing and during the Christmas and New Year period," she said.
Mr Scale said he would work closely with the taskforce's three sub-groups: schools and youth, a prescription drug misuse group and a sports health and well-being group.
He said the sports health group launched a pilot program last year, and other regions had now asked to be part of the program.
"It's really quite exciting," Mr Scale said.
"The Wimmera Drug Action Taskforce started in 2009 and then elapsed, before being taken up again in October 2010.
"The long-term goal is to secure some long-term funding for two or three years."
Mr Scale said anyone interested in joining the Wimmera Drug Action Taskforce could call him on 5362 1200 or Ms Harfield on 5362 1243.
