Nhill Sergeant Nelson Barwise said that between 7pm on Friday and 11am on Saturday, an unknown person took a pet pomeranian dog from a Nhill yard and cut the animal in half.
"The owner of the animal found the rear portion of the dog, which had been thrown over the fence," Sgt Barwise said.
"The family who owned the dog are obviously very distressed by what has happened; they feared their two-year-old daughter could have found the remains.
"It appears the animal has been deliberately cut in half with a sharp implement and the remainder of the animal's body has not been located."
Sgt Barwise said he was shocked by the crime.
"Nhill police would appreciate any information which may assist in the apprehension of the perpetrator, or perpetrators, of this cowardly act on a small defenceless animal," he said.
"It was a loved pet. I have never seen anything like this before, cutting an animal in half for no apparent reason. It is very disturbing.
"The family is really upset about this and we want to catch the person who did it."
Sgt Barwise said anyone with information about the mutilation could call Nhill Police Station on 5391 1022.
