More than 43,750 Victorian Certificate of Education students sat the exam yesterday morning.
At St Brigid's College in Horsham the excitement levels were high at 12.15pm, when the exam ended.
Student Ashleigh Magor, 18, said she was nervous going into the three-hour exam but was happy with how she went.
"The questions were easier than last year's exam that we used for practice,'' she said.
Lauren Arthur, 18, said the exam was easier than she expected. She said she had to tackle nerves but got through the exam okay.
"I feel good about it,'' she said. "When I read the questions I thought 'I can do that' and I felt so much better about the whole thing.''
Miss Arthur encouraged students to read exam questions slowly and thoroughly, instead of skim reading.
School captain Eleni Pitman said the exam 'flew by'.
"I wrote faster than ever,'' she said. "In the practice exam one part took me an hour. I finished that part in the exam and looked up and this time it had only taken me half an hour.''
Josh Pickering, 18, believes he did better than he had expected.
"It wasn't too hard, it was pretty good,'' he said.
Lachie Ray, 17, said he went well in the exam. He now looks forward to the rest of his exams.
"That's the hardest one out of the way,'' he said.
VCE students will spend the next few weeks completing their exams. They will finish in mid-November.
