Rain storm drenches Wimmera

05 Feb, 2010 09:40 AM
A HEAVY rain storm caused caused flash-flooding in Rainbow yesterday.

Rainbow resident Helen Friebel said her Taverner Street home was flooded 10 years ago almost to the day, and yesterday was a reminder of that event.

"We had a lot of rain out here," Mrs Friebel said.

"It didn't flood but water was covering the road in some parts and the police were here making sure people were being careful and everything was okay.

"But the water dispersed not long after - I was out paddling around in it for a bit."

Rainbow Post Office staff member Peta Bennett said they received 40 millimetres of rain between noon and 3pm.

"It is still raining now, so I don't know how much we will end up getting," she said yesterday.

"It has been great. It did all head south to Taverner Street for a while, but it is okay now."

Senior Constable Darren Ferluga of Edenhope said he had recorded 45 millimetres at the station by 3pm yesterday.

"We had a few blocked drains hold water up for a bit, but everything cleared eventually," he said.

At 5pm yesterday, Nhill Golf Club had received 25 millimetres of rain for the day.

Nevan Rethus, west of Horsham, had 47 millimetres in his rain gauge.

Brett Wheaton at Yanac South said he recorded 13.5 millimetres in the 24 hours to 5pm yesterday.

"Everything is a bonus, but it's only about weed management at the moment," he said.

Tracy Krupa of Marnoo said she had 19 millimetres in her rain gauge by 5pm, and the rain was continuing.

"We're very happy with that," she said.

"It's not good for the weeds but it's good for the gardens and the lucerne."

Hopetoun recorded two millimetres and Warracknabeal recorded nine millimetres by 3pm yesterday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted patchy rain for today, easing to isolated showers this morning until it clears about noon.

The bureau's website said Wimmera towns recorded the following totals by 5pm: Horsham 17.4 millimetres, Edenhope 32.4mm, Longerenong 36mm, Mt William 36 mm, Stawell 12mm, Hopetoun 2mm.
