LITTER has collected in Murtoa's Rabl Park waterways.
Lake Marma Advisory Committee member and Murtoa resident Steve Thomas said removing the litter was a council responsibility.
"I went down and had a look around and the big lake itself is quite tidy but the inlet has quite a lot of rubbish around the edges," he said.
"The town's stormwater is directed to Rabl Park and there are two main inlets into the Rabl Park lake and they have some rubbish along the sides of them which probably came in the last rain.
"That's not unusual to have some rubbish coming in through the streets of the town, I imagine they would have the same problem in Horsham."
Mr Thomas said `in an ideal world' rubbish catchers would prevent the litter from polluting the town's waterways, but it was an expensive solution to install them.
He said the increased amount of litter was `probably due to recent rain'.
Yarriambiack Shire Council infrastructure and planning director James Magee said council had been aware for some time that litter carried by stormwater had been a problem both at Warracknabeal and Murtoa.
He said council hoped to solve the problem through the installation of litter traps.
Yarriambiack Shire Council heard yesterday at its council meeting how waste had also been dumped along Yarriambiack Creek.
Mr Magee said a neighbouring farmer brought the issue to council's attention.
He said it appeared three to four loads of rubbish had been dumped in the creek.
"We advised the Department of Sustainability and Environment which then sent an investigations officer to the site," Mr Magee said.
"He visited the site with our local laws officer and has now undertaken an investigation into the dumping."
The Department of Sustainability and Environment is responsible for looking after the site.
While Mr Magee said illegal dumping of rubbish in the creek had not been a major issue in the past, several loads of rubbish had been dumped in the past few months which had caused council concern.
