 Shire backs carrots

Shire backs carrots

18 Jun, 2007 10:22 AM
A 2200-ACRE carrot farm will go ahead at Kaniva despite objections about environmental concerns.

The West Wimmera Shire Council approved a planning application for the carrot farm at Thursday night's general committee meeting at Kaniva.

Lamattina Farms was given permission to remove native vegetation, including more than 130 trees, in order to begin harvesting carrots at the Kaniva-Edenhope Road site.

Chief Executive Jim McKay said the objections had no substance.

"A majority of the objections were based on water issues and it wasn't relevant in the context to the planning permit," he said.

Mr McKay said the Department of Sustainability and Energy had assessed the site and their approval was good enough for council.

"Council is pleased, it's a good business which will create jobs," he said.

"It's about putting us on a map, they produce about 30 per cent of the Australian carrot market."

Owner Rocky Lamattina said it was wonderful that the shire was proactive and supported business.

"If we don't work together with medium businesses, you're going to have everything shutting," he said.

Mr Lamittina said the carrot farm at Kaniva would allow his business to produce more carrots in the summer months.

"The weather and the soil will give us the quality and consistency that our customers deserve," he said.

"We have harvested our first trial crop of carrots and they were excellent."

Mr Lamittina, who has been a vegetable grower since 1962, said he was passionate about building businesses in small communities.

"My family has been in Robinvale for 16 years," Mr Lamittina said. "We've plan to begin harvesting in September for five months and we'll employ local people."

He said the business will grow in the next five to 10 years.

"As our needs grow, we're looking to wash the carrots there too."

Mr Lamittina said he wasn't worried about the objections that council had received.

"People should have their say," he said.

"Once it's explained to them we're putting land aside for the next generation, they will understand."

Mr Lamittina said the remaining land that wasn't used for carrot farming on the 4854-acre property would be used as bushland.

"I'm all for the environment," he said.
