FIV E men are in custody following the death of a Horsham man, 25, in the city's north overnight.

The Homicide Squad and Horsham police searched several Horsham homes for evidence in relation to the death on Saturday.

Police and paramedics were called to the intersection of Shirley Street and McMillan Court, Horsham North, at about 10pm Friday.

The man had suffered head injuries and was taken by ambulance to Wimmera Base hospital, where he died in the early hours of Saturday.

Police have not released the name of the dead man.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter said the dead man was earlier caught drink-driving by Horsham police.

He allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of .113 at about 7pm Friday.

"He received a penalty notice and was released from the station,'' he said.

"After that he went to an address near Shirley Street, where an altercation with a man took place.''

Det Inspector Potter said another altercation, with a group of men who the victim knew, took place later on Friday night.

"It's not clear who has done what, but the man was seriously assaulted,'' he said.

"We'll know more about the cause of the death once the post mortem has been done.''

Det Inspector Potter told the Mail-Times that weapons could have been used in the assault.

"It's possible weapons were used but the nature is not known,'' he said.

Det Inspector Potter said some of the men in custody were known to police.

"Five men are in custody assisting us with enquiries,'' he said.

"We are still seeking the whereabouts of another man to help us with inquiries.

"We're also interviewing several witnesses.''

Det Inspector Potter urged anyone with information about the death to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
