CALLAWADDA shearer Aaron Hemley has plied his trade in a lot of places but he never expected Chapel Street, South Yarra, would be one of them.
Mr Hemley is training for a 48-hour endurance shearing world record attempt at Central Park, Stawell, in August to raise money for Stawell Regional Health's oncology unit.
He plans to raise awareness of his campaign by shearing a sheep on stage during a cabaret night headlined by international theatre star Steve Judkins at the trendy Melbourne live music venue Red Bennies on May 17.
The cabaret will include performances from cast members of hit musicals Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia along with an appearance from former Uncanny X-Men lead singer Brian Mannix.
Mr Hemley said he never thought his shearing would lead him onto the stage.
"The last time I was on a stage would have been in primary school, so I'm a little bit nervous. But it will be a good night," he said.
"Steve is about to head back to the United States to work and he wanted to have a farewell show. He found out about my cause through a mate of mine and he invited me to come along."
Mr Hemley will also have a short auction on the night with signed Collingwood and Essendon jumpers along with VIP tickets to the `Dreamtime at the G' match later this season and other items up for grabs.
All proceeds from the auction will go towards Mr Hemley's goal of raising $200,000 for the oncology unit.
Mr Hemley said he had called a friend in Melbourne to bring a sheep to the venue on the night.
"I never thought I would be shearing in Chapel Street," he said.
"I thought about bringing a sheep on the bus with a leash but that wasn't going to work, so hopefully on the night I have a sheep there waiting for me to shear."
He said the plan was to show the audience, expected to be about 130 people, how strenuous shearing was.
"I want them to see how tough it will be. I also want to tell them how many people in the Wimmera are affected by cancer," he said.
Stawell Regional Health officials have organised a bus to the show.
Mr Hemley said a combined bus and show ticket costing $50 would be available from Stawell Regional Health on 5358 8513 or Jacpea Graphic Design on 5358 2260.
"It is a great price because tickets for the show are worth $28," he said.
"There will be about 48 seats on the bus so we hope to fill them up, even at such short notice."
Mr Hemley said he hoped the chance to take his shearing to a city audience would help attract more money to his cause.
"You never know what could come of it," he said.
