Sunrise weather presenter Fifi Box braves the cold at Mt Arapiles

06 Jul, 2009 11:50 AM
A LARGE crowd braved the cold to welcome Sunrise TV presenter Fifi Box to Mt Arapiles on Friday morning.

Ms Box said the crowd at Mt Arapiles was one of the best turn-outs she had had since she started presenting the weather across Australia for Sunrise on Prime TV six months ago.

``There were so many people out so early with their signs,'' she said. ``We really appreciate all the people who do make the effort to come out and see us.''

Ms Box said she arrived at Mt Arapiles at 5am on Friday to prepare for her first live cross to Sunrise at 6am.

Ms Box said she had visited the Wimmera many times and had once applied for a job at a Horsham radio station.

``I was nearly a Horsham local but then I ended up in radio at Traralgon instead,'' she said.

She said it was her first visit to Mt Arapiles.

Ms Box said her TV weather presenting job was rewarding.

``I get to travel around to fantastic places all over Australia and meet fantastic people,'' she said. ``I do live out of my suitcase though, so that's my excuse for why it's so big.''

Ms Box was disappointed to hear a crowd had gathered at Mt Arapiles on Thursday when she was first meant to visit.

She said storms across the state meant she was unable to fly to Mildura as planned on Tuesday, which affected her plans for the rest of the week.

``Weather just happens sometimes and plans fall out of place, but some of the people who came out on Thursday were back again on Friday, so I did get to meet them,'' she said.

Ms Box talked with campers beside a fire at Centenary Park, children, Natimuk Agricultural and Pastoral Society members and rock climbers during her live crosses.

Rockclimber Steve Bell spoke to Ms Box during her 8am weather cross, while his 15-year-old daughter Sophie climbed the Golden Streak boulder in the background.

Mr Bell said he had moved to Natimuk a month ago, but had been a regular climber at Mt Arapiles.

``I first read about Mt Arapiles in a British climbing magazine 30 years ago, and came from the United Kingdom just to climb it,'' he said.

Mr Bell has climbed Mt Everest and said Mt Arapiles was a `world-class destination'.

New Zealand camper Sophie Ballagh was asleep when the Sunrise crew arrived at 5am.

``It did wake us up but we didn't mind, it was kind of amusing having all the crowd here,'' Ms Ballagh said.

Fiona Jervis of Vectis took her two sons to Mt Arapiles to meet Ms Box.

Ms Jervis said Riley, 8, was excited to meet the TV star.

``Riley made a card thanking Fifi for coming and was able to give it to her after she finished the show,'' she said.

Ms Jervis said they gave Ms Box a bottle of district wine.

Dimboola's Josh King, 11, was up at 5am on Friday to meet Ms Box.

He made a sign saying hello to his gran in Dimboola and was excited to receive a call from his gran after the 8.30am weather cross to say she had seen him on TV with Ms Box.
