Weekend blazes in the Wimmera

06 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
WIMMERA fire-fighters battled a 64-hectare fire at Brimpaen during the weekend, while a close eye was also kept on a fire burning near Edenhope since Wednesday.

Brimpaen Fire Brigade 4th lieutenant Gerard Matthews said the brigade was called to a fire on private property at Brimpaen about 2.30pm on Saturday.

"About 10 hectares of land was in stringy bark scrub, which made access difficult," Mr Matthews said. "We had about eight fire trucks, plus two Department of Sustainability and Environment bulldozers.

"Crews patrolled on Saturday night and the Brimpaen brigade were able to leave about 9.30pm."

CFA District 17 operations officer Ian Day said yesterday the fire was brought under control during the night.

"Crews were there all night and we had aircraft over this morning checking out hotspots," Mr Day said.

"We also had fresh crews out mopping up and blacking out.

"I'm expecting there will be fire brigades present for a few days."

Mr Day said aircraft stopped the fire on the edge of the Grampians National Park.

He said there was no property damage or injury and the cause of the blaze would be investigated.

Horsham DSE incident controller Russell Manning said a fire in the Meereek State Forest near Edenhope had 30 DSE fire-fighters patrolling it yesterday.

"We've got a helicopter fitted with a forward looking infrared which picks up hot spots including stumps and materials burning under the ground," Mr Manning said.

"Crews have also used a hand-held thermal imaging device which attracts differential heat, which is very effective in blacking out fires."

Mr Manning said fire-fighting crews had done well, considering the Mt Arapiles fire tower reported winds of 95 kilometres an hour at 10.15am yesterday.

He said the temperature dropped from 23 degrees to 14 degrees at about 10am. He said abated winds should help keep the fire under control.

Mr Manning said fires in the Grampians and Little Desert last week were now declared safe.

*A LAWN-MOWER caused a quarter-hectare grass and scrub fire at Callawadda, between Glenorchy and Marnoo, on Friday morning.

Callawadda Fire Brigade was called to the private property fire at 10.20am and the fire was contained in 20 minutes.

*WIMMERA fire-fighters put out a 1.5-hectare bushfire in the Toolondo area on Friday.

The fire, reported at 12.20pm, was south of Toolondo Caravan Park, near Telangatuk East-Rocklands Road.
