THE Wimmera's little ones took a big step yesterday as they embarked on their first day at school.
Term one began for some Wimmera schools yesterday, while other schools will start classes today.
Murtoa mum Joanne Warrick said her five-year-old twins Jed and Riana were excited about their first day at Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School at Murtoa yesterday.
"They had been pretending to be at school before they got there," she said. "They were amazingly enthused. Jed always wants to embrace anything new and Riana can be occasionally more reserved but she didn't hesitate at all.
"I was excited and probably a little lost. I love embracing new chapters in their lives."
Mrs Warrick said the twins told her they did not want to be picked up on their first day.
"Their grandparents live close to the school so they want to walk to nana and pa's after school," she said. "It is nice that they have that confidence."
Mrs Warrick said she was thrilled the twins were attending school in Murtoa.
"It is an amazing school - they go beyond the call of duty," she said. "It gives you a lot of confidence when they are going to such a caring place."
Murtoa College principal Dr Joanna Day said the first day of school went well.
"We have 11 new staff, including six new teachers. Four of them are graduates," she said. "There are 280 students this year and nine new preps. We have 43 year seven students and two exchange students.''
Dr Day said the school also had a new sign - created by students - after the previous one was stolen.
Horsham Special School principal Matt Copping said the school's first day went 'fantastically well'.
"We had a really good curriculum planning day on Wednesday and the students arrived bright-eyed and bushy-tailed yesterday," he said. "We have 75 students enrolled this year.
"We have another great year ahead and everyone is very excited about the building of the new school."
