Creek shines at National Champs

28 Feb, 2011 09:39 AM
HORSHAM basketballer Mitch Creek played a starring role in helping Victoria claim back-to-back Under-20 National Championships in Maitland on Saturday night.

Creek scored 10 points in Victoria's 77-70 win over Queensland in the final.

Creek, 18, was also a member of the Victorian championship side last year.

He said he was thrilled to win the championships again.

"It was an awesome experience and a great team effort," he said.

Creek's father Jeff was courtside for the final.

"It was a phenomenal game of basketball," he said. "The boys were down at half-time, but they fought their way back into it.

"The stadium was full and the crowd was riding every shot.

"It was just a fantastic game."

Creek's stellar week was recognised when he won the Bob Stanton Award for most valuable player at the tournament.

"It was quite surprising, I didn't expect it," Creek said.

"We came as a team to win the championships, so this was just the cherry on the top."

Creek, who plays with the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League, was one of only a handful national league players taking part in the championships.

Creek said his Adelaide coach, Marty Clarke, supported him taking part in the week-long tournament.

"I spoke to Marty about it and he was quite keen for me to finish off my junior development in the junior ranks," he said. "As soon as we realised we had a bye in the same week as the championships, it just all fitted in perfectly."

Creek said he would now return to the 36ers.

"It will be straight back into training," he said.

"We've got a month and a bit left of matches. We'll be trying to get a few wins and finish the season on the high."

Horsham coach Trevor Holmes led the Victorian Country Ivor Burge men's team at the championships, leading the team to a fourth place finish.
