HORSHAM basketballer Darcy Tucker received a one-on-one lesson from a state assistant coach yesterday.
Vic Country under-16 assistant coach Chris Clyne spent two hours at Horsham Basketball Stadium with Tucker.
Clyne coaches Ballarat's under-16 side in the Victorian Junior Basketball League.
Tucker, a point guard, joined that program late last year.
Clyne watched Tucker represent Horsham Amateur Basketball Association at a Hamilton Junior Basketball Tournament at the weekend and decided to visit Tucker in Horsham.
"I looked at him and thought he had a few things he needed to work on," Clyne said. "We worked on getting to the basket and different ways to finish off when he gets there.
"When a kid wants to put the work in, you're more than happy to help out."
Tucker is eyeing a spot on Vic Country's roster for the Australian Under-16 Basketball Championships in Tamworth in July.
Clyne said Vic Country would have a try-out day in Bendigo where 30 players would be short-listed and invited to attend a four-day camp in Ballarat in March.
Clyne said Tucker was capable of earning a spot on the 10-person team.
"The national championships has teams from right across Australia," he said.
"It's the pinnacle of junior basketball. It is his next goal and is achievable for him."
Clyne said Tucker showed promise as a point guard since the under-14 level.
"As a guard he has exceptional ball handling skills, is quick, has good vision and his decision-making is fantastic," Clyne said.
"He has quick feet and hands in defence."
