Horsham basketballers prepare for state try-outs

03 Feb, 2012 08:54 AM
FOUR Horsham Amateur Basketball Association players are preparing for under-16 state team try-outs.

Darcy Tucker, 15, Jarrod Berry, 13, Mikayla McAuliffe, 15, and Chloe Bibby, 13, will attend a Vic Country try-out day in Bendigo on February 18.

Thirty players will be short-listed for both the Vic Country boys and girls teams and will attend a four-day camp in Bendigo.

Teams of 10 will be selected for the Australian Under-16 Basketball Championships in Tamworth in July.

McAuliffe played for Vic Goldminers at the Australian Junior Country Cup in Albury in January.

"I was really happy with my performance. I think I did Horsham proud," McAuliffe said.

She said she would train once a day in the lead up to the Vic Country try-out.

"I'll give it everything I have, will try my best and see how it goes," McAuliffe said.

"It would be a great honour and I'd be very proud and humble if I was selected."

Tucker said he was quietly confident about his chances of making the Vic Country roster.

Tucker is playing for Ballarat in Victorian Junior Basketball League.

"I got to the camp last year as a bottom-age," Tucker said.

"It would be really good. It would be a massive step, a massive competition up there at nationals."

Bibby said playing at a national level would help her develop her game.

"You'd learn where everyone else is at and I'd play against other tall girls," Bibby said.

Bibby played for Vic Goldminers at Southern Cross Basketball Challenge in January.

"It was so much fun. You got to meet many girls and play against the metro team," she said.

"They are not as scary as everyone says they are."

Aily McAuliffe, Georgia Hiscock and Ally Hiscock will try out for a second year with South West Basketball Academy on March 24 in Hamilton.

McAuliffe competed at Southern Cross Basketball Challenge and the Hiscocks played in the country cup in Albury in January.

HABA president Gareth Hiscock said coach Steve Bruce had done a terrific job with the academy.

Bibby and Berry were part of the academy in 2011.

"We had one of the biggest representations at those tournaments and for such a small association it's a credit to Steve," Mr Hiscock said.
