CBL Hornets coach Trevor Holmes has praised his side for finishing its inaugural Country Basketball League south-west conference season off strongly yesterday.
The Hornets went down to Terang Tornadoes, 59-76.
Holmes said the team, which failed to win a game, shared the scoring around with Malachi Harvey, Danny Kennedy and Jarred Ohayon leading the way.
"I'm really happy. There was only eight of them and they worked their butts off, did everything we asked of them and finished the season on a high," he said.
"Everyone stepped up. It's something we'd been striving for all year, to get a great team effort, and we saved it for the last game of the year.
"It was a big turnaround after being beaten by 60-odd points the week before."
Holmes said maintaining pressure and having confidence as a team helped the Hornets.
Holmes said scores were level at 16-all at quarter-time.
"Three-poin t scores hurt us. It's something we have to work on," he said.
Holmes said the coaching staff was pleased with Horsham Amateur Basketball Association's first venture into CBL competition.
It was used as a development program, with the Hornets' inexperienced side often fronting up against stronger, more mature teams.
"If I sat down and worked it out, there would be more pluses than minuses," Holmes said.
"The improvement will show next season. Now these boys have a bit of experience they're not scared to get in there and score heavily.
"Honestly, we were competitive most quarters of the year.
"Let's hope next season we have more experienced players in the CBL team. It would be very good if we had more experienced players, basically it was all that was lacking."
