BLACKHEATH batsman Hamish Exell stamped himself as one of the premier batsmen in Horsham Cricket Association with an unbeaten 152 on Saturday.
Exell, 20, guided the Plainsmen to an unlikely victory against Jung Tigers at Kalkee.
Blackheath had its back to the wall early, languishing at 7-116 chasing 229.
Exell, who resumed on 26, was joined by Brendan Hobbs at the crease and saw the Plainsmen through to victory.
Hobbs made 54 not out.
Exell said he always felt the Plainsmen were a chance for victory.
"I thought we were a chance, but it was going to be pretty hard from there," Exell said.
Jung Tigers captain Jason Pymer was causing headaches for the Blackheath batsmen with his left-arm medium pace, while leg-spinner Conor Lawson ripped through the middle order.
Both claimed three wickets.
Exell compiled runs at will with an array of strokeplay all over the ground, while Hobbs was able to keep the strike ticking over and go on the attack as well, highlighted by a majestic cover drive.
"Hobbsy batted really well, it was the best I have seen him bat," Exell said.
"When he got past 15 he was looking like he was pretty set and it was then I thought we were a pretty good chance."
It was Exell's first knock of 150 and his second A Grade century, after he made his first with Toolondo-Clear Lake two seasons ago.
His knock included 15 fours and one six.
Exell said it was a great win.
"It was a really good win for the team," he said.
"We have started a lot better than last season and hopefully it should set us up to have a tilt at the finals."
Exell returned to his junior club Blackheath last season, when it resumed in A Grade competition, after a stint at Toolondo-Clear Lake.
It was a big weekend of tough results and high-scoring cricket.
Rup-Minyip gun all-rounder Paul Morgan hit his second consecutive century with 131 not out to guide the Blue Panthers to victory against Colts.
Chasing 266, the Blue Panthers were in a strong position from early in the piece with a strong start from top order batsmen Clint Midgley with 49 and Adam Carter with 53.
Morgan then took over and ensured they reached the target, finishing at 8-275.
Craig Britten was best of the bowlers for Colts, claiming 5-74 off 16 overs.
Horsham Saints won a nail-biter against Homers, just managing to scrape over the line by three runs.
Homers will be left to rue a missed opportunity when number 11 batsman Jon Fitzgerald was dropped early in his innings, before he teamed with Luke Brunkhorst for a 43-run match- winning partnership.
Brunkhorst made 37 not out and Fitzgerald 12.
Saints opener Gary Davidson set the tone early with 70.
Ash Hopper was the pick of the Homers bowlers with a four-wicket haul.
Toolondo-Clear Lake registered a strong victory against Noradjuha.
The Lakers chased down the Nardoos' total of 226 for the loss of seven wickets.
