Morgan plunders century

19 Oct, 2009 08:47 AM
RUP-MINYIP star Paul Morgan unleashed a brutal display of power hitting to destroy any hope of a Blackheath win on Saturday.

The Plainsmen started strongly to claim early wickets and build on confidence gained from their opening round upset win against Horsham Saints.

Enter Morgan.

Paul Morgan joined his brother Craig at the crease with the game in the balance at 4-51, before gaining the ascendancy with a majestic 117 littered with a tirade of fours and sixes.

Blackheath fieldsmen were pushed back to the fence, but could only watch as Morgan sent the ball sailing over their heads or whistling past them.

His pull shots were dynamic and his drives strong.

Blue Panthers skipper Adam Carter said his team-mates watched the fast- paced century in awe.

He predicted it would have only taken 60 balls.

"It was obviously a fair display," Carter said.

"Just striking the ball perfectly, it was one of the better knocks I have seen him play."

While Morgan was brutalising the Blackheath attack, Craig played the anchor role to finish with 32 valuable runs as the duo put on 157 for the fifth wicket.

The Blackheath bowlers were powerless.

The Plainsmen set about attacking the Blue Panthers' target of 220 from the outset with openers Mick McGough and Harry Young notching a 71-run first wicket partnership.

McGough hit a quick-fire 45 and Young added 28, but the game spiralled away from there.

Enter the Morgans again as Paul claimed one wicket and Glenn four as they routed the top order.

Youngster Vincent White made things difficult for the tail-enders with a strong 10-over spell snaring three wickets.

Homers continued their strong start to the season with a good win against Noradjuha.

Simon Hopper led the way for the Pigeons with 39 in their total of 119.

Josh Colbert claimed four wickets for the Nardoos.

Chris Hopper did the job for Homers with the ball claiming 5-8 off 10 overs, including six maidens.

Jung Tigers fell four runs short of victory against Toolondo-Clear Lake.

A hard hitting 56 from Garrett Liston got the Lakers to 182.

The Tigers posted 178 in return with Steve Cameron making 44 and captain Jason Pymer 31 not out.

Horsham Saints passed Colts' score of 174 with three overs remaining.

Saints opener Gary Davidson made 77, while Colts' Dean Arnott top- scored for his team with 70.
