Wimmera football coach Mal Coutts marks 250th

18 May, 2009 12:46 PM
LONG-TIME Wimmera football coach Mal Coutts savored a win in his 250th game on Saturday at Kaniva.

Coutts, 51, of Kaniva led his Bordertown team to a 90-point win over Kaniva-Leeor United at Kaniva in the Kowree-Naracoorte-Tatiara Football League.

Coutts a former coach of Dimboola, Nhill and Kaniva-Leeor United, said he had been humbled by the day.

"It was a lovely day," he said. "The boys said they were going to win the game for me and they did."

Coutts said he had been touched by the support he had received from people across the Wimmera.

"Quite a few Kaniva people came over to me and said congratulations which was very touching," he said. "I also got a text message from Al Braithwaite from Dimboola saying congratulations. It was nice to be remembered."

The Roosters had a number of outstanding players on the day led by former Cougars reserves player Michael Crilly who kicked nine goals and teenage midfielder Clint Diment who turned down a game with Glenelg under-19s in the South Australian National Football League to play in the match.

Coutts said Crilly only came back to footy a couple of years ago.

"He played half a season with Kaniva-Leeor reserves and then decided to come here and play with his mates.

He has always been a good golfer and cricketer and he had also been good as a junior. He struggled at the start but kept getting better. He played very well," Coutts said.

"Clint got a late call on Thursday asking him to play for Glenelg because they were short of players. But he said no because he wanted to play in this match for me. He has played for them before and will play there again but I was very humbled by his choice."

Coutts said he was amazed at his post-game reception.

"The boys carried me off the game which is no mean feat," he said. "I thought they would have no chance of doing that."

Bordertown managed to win all its football and netball games on the day.

"People say that winning is everything but I have really loved the chance to meet so many wonderful people," he said.

Coutts' wife Judi and son Michael were at the game as were his parents Marg and Lloyd.
