The Diggers defeated Stawell by two goals on Saturday to sit two points outside the top five.
With a bye to finish the season, United is assured four points and remains in top five calculations.
Diggers coach Maryann Ellis said it would be a nervous time for her side.
"We have to play the waiting game," Ellis said.
"If either Stawell or Horsham lose, we are in.
"If Horsham and Stawell both lose, we'll end up going up to fourth."
Stawell joint-coach Tracey Dark said the Warriors had a must-win game against Warrack Eagles on Saturday.
"We have to win this week to put our fate in our own hands," Dark said.
"It proves how even the competition is.
"All the coaches have said at different times it's even and don't take anyone lightly."
Ellis said the Diggers led the Warriors for most of the match and were able to hold on for a season-defining win.
"We were six points up and got home so we are quite content," Ellis said.
"We seemed to keep our cool and slow the ball down."
Dark said the Warriors were unable to capitalise on their chances.
"We had opportunities there to do it but had turnovers a few times when we shoudln't have," Dark said.
Ellis said Caitlin Story, Emma Ryan and Brooke Pay were United's best and youngsters Siobhan Robertson and Abby Martin continued to establish themselves in A Grade netball.
In other A Grade matches, Ararat defeated Horsham, 62-39.
Terri-Anne Lewis and Jakki Gibson were the Rats' best and Abby Dumensy and Paige Lloyd were the Demons' best.
Dimboola was no match for Horsham Saints, going down by 49 goals.
The Saints' best were Zeena Kelm and Megan O'Connor and and the Roos' best were Carly McDonald and Shannon Pietsch.
Georgia Batson and Emma Dickinson were Nhill's best in its win over Minyip-Murtoa.
Lauren Hotker and Lisa Handreck stood tall for Minyip-Murtoa.
