SOME of the best Limited Sportsman drivers in Australia will tackle Blue Ribbon Raceway on Sunday for the annual Les McMaster 5000.

Leading drivers from Victoria and SA will challenge for $5000 in a prestigious event which continues to grow and is now offering more prizemoney than Victorian and SA titles put together.

Organisers expect up to 25 drivers, including visitors from Bairnsdale, Geelong, Ballarat, Hamilton, Murray Bridge, Mt Gambier and Bordertown to roar into action for three eight-lap heats before tackling a 25-lap final.

Limited Sportsman Horsham representative Paul Dumesny said the event had attracted all but one of the best Limited Sportsman drivers in south-eastern Australia.

"These drivers are the best and they want to be here because it is such a prestigious event," he said.

The Limited Sportsman class is a smaller version of an open-wheel sprintcar, producing up to 215 horse-power and capable of high speed.

"They are also prone to spills and thrills," Mr Dumesny said.

SA number three Peter Walters from Belmont will challenge strongly for the title but can expect fierce competition from the likes of Matt Grist from Ballarat, Jock and Paul Baker from Horsham, Bairnsdale's Mark Noonan, Ben Jeffries from Mt Gambier

and Geelong number three Nathan McKenzie.

"This event has gradually built up and evolved. It's the race all good drivers want to win," Mr Dumesny said.

While the Les McMaster 5000 is the blue-ribbon event of the meet, an interstate junior teams challenge between drivers from Victoria and SA will also generate plenty of interest.

The junior challenge will feature junior drivers in 1200cc sedans with Victorian and SA drivers working as teams to accumulate points.

Josephine Walsgott, 17, one of only two junior girls in Horsham Motor Sports Club, said she was looking forward to the challenge.

"This will be my third year. I've always loved driving, the adrenalin rush and getting in there with the boys," she said.

Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty presented the Dimboola Memorial Secondary College year 12 student with a Victorian flag to fly during the challenge.

A three-litre sedan series will be the other feature event on the program which will also include support events.

The Horsham club will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Blue Ribbon Raceway during the afternoon. It has invited past members and drivers who will attend a barbecue in the barn pit area at the raceway after the meeting.

The Kalkee plains will come to life in front of an expected big crowd from 2pm.
