Rowers celebrate as Dimboola Regatta returns this weekend

20 Nov, 2009 10:08 AM
LARGE crowds are expected to line the bank of the Wimmera River this weekend when competitive rowing returns to Dimboola for the first time since 2005.

The Dimboola Regatta is on tomorrow, and the Wimmera Sprints Regatta is on Sunday.

The regattas have not been run since 2005 because of drought, but recent rainfalls and environmental flows have since improved the condition of the river.

Dimboola Rowing Club committee member Michael Salter said with the river currently at its highest level in more than a decade, excitement was building for the event.

``From a spectator's point of view it is going to be exceptionally high standard viewing,'' he said.

``The committee has been working hard to get the course up to scratch, and we are now well and truly prepared and ready for some excellent rowing.''

Salter said the revival of the event meant a lot to the region.

``The Dimboola community in particular has been fantastic in supporting us and getting the regatta up and running again,'' he said.

Salter said he knew of people attending the event from throughout the state just to see the river and the re-emergence of the Dimboola Rowing Club.

Club secretary Ray Hutchinson agreed the Dimboola community was rapt to host the regatta again.

``I've never seen so many people in Dimboola,'' he said.

``They are all coming just to have a look at the water.''

``The regatta will be great if that is an indication of what it is going to be like.''

Club captain Coleen Bouts is looking forward to the regatta, where she will return to competitive rowing for the first time in 25 years.

``Since we've got water I've been madly trying to get fit,'' she said.

``We're still pinching ourselves that we've even got water.''

Bouts will compete with two omen from Carrum and another from Mildura in the regatta.

``We've had no practice together, but we'll just get together on the day,'' she said.

Bouts said she was feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement leading into the regatta.

``I'm looking forward to it but I'm really nervous because this is my first year rowing as captain,'' she said.
