HUSBAND and wife combination Wayne and Lisa Hawker of Kaniva proved a formidable force at the Australian Clay Target Association National Championships at Wagga Wagga.
The annual championships attracted more than 500 of the best shooters from Australia and New Zealand for six days last week.
The couple competed on each day of the titles, both shooting personal bests.
Lisa won two national titles, defending her Champion of Champions title won last year and taking out the women's single barrel event.
Wayne finished second in the men's double-barrel AA event, and was named in the Mackintosh team, an honour bestowed on the best 25 shooters at the championships.
Wayne shot a personal best of 503 straight targets in the men's double barrel.
"His previous best was just over 300 targets, so he smashed his record," Lisa said.
Lisa defended her Champion of Champions title in a high-pressure shoot off.
The Champion of Champions event comprises 25 targets double-barrel, 25 targets single-barrel, and 25 points targets all shot off 18 metres.
"At the end of the event there were four of us tied on 121 out of the 125," she said.
"We all had to shoot another 15 targets, and I was lucky enough to hit all of mine cleanly.
"It was very nerve-racking."
Lisa said she and David enjoyed competitive shooting. "I've only been shooting for about eight years, and Wayne's always done it since he was about 12," she said.
"When I married him he was doing a lot of shooting, so I said give me a go at this, and that's how it all started."
She said the couple now regularly travelled to competitions together and were regular entrants in the national championships.
"We always enjoy catching up with friends from all over Australia at the event," she said.
