Beulah talent off to USA

30 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
RISING Beulah tennis talent Simon Bardell will move to America next month to further his promising career.

Bardell, 18, has been accepted into Meridian Community College in Mississippi.

It continues a remarkable rise for the former Birchip P-12 School student, who has continued to go from strength to strength since taking up tennis.

"My family have always played tennis, so I started coaching and playing in tournaments as well," he said.

Bardell played a season of pennant with Central Park Tennis Club, in Central Wimmera Tennis Association, in 2008-09 where he was coached by Natalie Lama.

He travels to Melbourne for coaching and plays on the Tennis Australia circuit.

Bardell was accepted into the college after sending video footage of himself playing and talking to college coaches.

He is ranked 291 in Australia.

Bardell said he didn't know how far he could get with his tennis.

"I'm not really sure, I just want to do the best I possibly can," he said.

Bardell will study sports science in between his tennis commitments with Meridian Community College Eagles.

"We have three morning tennis sessions and four afternoon sessions of tennis, with study in between," he said.

Bardell said he would study at the college for two years before continuing his studies at a bigger university.

"It's a junior college so after two years I'll transfer and hopefully get into an even better tennis team," he said.

Bardell will travel to Meridian on August 11.

He has been to America twice, spending two month-long coaching stints with tennis coach Raj Lama in Florida in the past two years.
