EDENHOPE tennis player Oscar McDonald has been selected to represent Country Victoria in a national junior event in January.
McDonald, 13, will be part of a four-member Country Victoria side for the Foundation Cup Boys Interstate Challenge.
The Foundation Cup is an annual event for the best 13 and under juniors in the country, and will be played at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre during the Medibank International tennis tournament.
The Medibank International is a key warm-up event for professional players ahead of the Australian Open, and confirmed entrants for the January 10 to 16 event include Serena Williams, Elena Dementieva, Sam Stosur, Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis.
McDonald, who plays pennant for Drung South in the Central Wimmera Tennis Association, said he was excited to learn he would be playing at the same venue as the professional players.
"I'm looking forward to playing against the best junior players and being at the Medibank International tournament as well," he said.
McDonald said teams for the Foundation Cup were selected on performances at a John Fitzgerald Cup in Geelong earlier this month.
McDonald was a member of the Wimmera team which finished ninth in the tournament.
He said he couldn't wait to play in Sydney.
"It's exciting, I've never been to Sydney before," he said.
"I won most of my matches at the John Fitzgerald Cup so I was hoping I would be selected but I wasn't sure if I would be."
The Foundation Cup uses a round- robin format with ties consisting of four singles and two doubles rubbers.
