Perfect start for Lawn

19 Oct, 2009 08:49 AM
HORSHAM Lawn grabbed early premiership favouritism with a big victory against St Michaels in round three of Central Wimmera Tennis Association on Saturday.

Lawn, who last won the premiership two seasons ago, announced themselves as the form side of the competition with an 11 sets, 116 games to four sets, 95 games victory.

The win has Lawn at the top of the ladder as the only undefeated team in the pennant competition.

Horsham Lawn president Don McRae said the club was surprised at how easily they accounted for last season's grand finalists.

"We thought it was going to be a little bit closer than it was in the end," McRae said.

"Our women played very well, and Graeme Wood played well in his return.

"Overall, it was a pretty good day for our club."

Adam Troeth, Shane Gillespie, Rachel McRae and Wendy Lloyd won all three of their sets for Horsham Lawn.

Ian Nitschke was a key player for the Saints, winning two sets.

McRae said the club would not get too far ahead of themselves.

"It is a bit early in the season to start talking about premierships, especially after we only just scraped through against Central Park the week before," he said.

"It is a pretty even competition this season and anybody could beat anybody on their day.

"If we can stay free of injuries and continue the form we have got, we are certainly going to be competitive that is for sure."

Kalkee's premiership hangover continued with a big loss against Central Park, nine sets, 105 games to five sets, 99 games.

The Kees are now 0-3 and face Horsham Lawn next round.

Drung South continued its run of form with a nine sets, 109 games to six sets, 96 games victory against Warracknabeal.

Lachie King, Andrew King, and Richard Goudie returned to strengthen the Drungsters line-up.

Lachie King and Goudie won all three of their sets.

Sarah Koschitzke won all three of her sets for Warracknabeal.

- A Grade saw some hard fought matches with three decided on game difference.

Natimuk scraped home by seven games against St Michaels, Haven defeated Kalkee by 11 games and Noradjuha claimed a 10-game victory against Central Park Blue.
