World champ Emma Carney to compete in Horsham

03 Feb, 2012 08:56 AM
TWO-TIME world champion Emma Carney will compete in the Tri-Horsham annual triathlon later this month.

Carney is a former world number one triathlete and has won nine Australian championships to complement her two world crowns.

Tri-Horsham president Mark Pumpa said it was a massive coup for the event.

"Her profile is just absolutely magnificent. I don't think we can do any better than that," he said.

Mr Pumpa said it was a chance meeting with Carney at a Horsham cafe that led to her agreeing to compete in the February 18 event.

Carney, who is based in Melbourne, was travelling through Horsham on her way to Adelaide.

Mr Pumpa recognised her and approached her to offer an invitation to compete.

"It'll be great to see her tear it up, I'm tipping the track record will be smashed," he said.

Mr Pumpa hopes Carney's appearance will inspire more Wimmera women to become triathletes.

"It will be great that Emma can promote women in the sport and show just how good they are," he said.

"Women often underestimate themselves in our sport."

In an added boost to the event, elite Geelong triathlete Anthony Goss will also compete.

Mr Pumpa expects both Goss and Carney to be a chance to break the course record of one hour, one minute and 23 seconds.

Echuca athlete Steve Gray, a four-time Tri-Horsham champion, holds the current record.

Tri-Horsham will host the annual twilight event at Horsham Aquatic Centre, with triathlon, duathlon and mini-triathlon options available for competitors.

A long-course triathlon involves a 500-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and five-kilometre run.

A duathlon does not include a swim leg, while a long-course mini-triathlon, consisting of a 200-metre swim, seven kilometre ride and two-kilometre run, is an option for junior competitors.

Mr Pumpa said participants could compete as individuals or in a team.

He encouraged those interested to register by visiting www.saac.com.au.
