Online gambling. It’s easy to bet, too easy to lose is being hailed an Australian first, the only campaign of its type to address interactive gambling technologies available via smartphones, tablets, computers and interactive televisions.

“This accessibility, while convenient for some, poses real risks to others of increased problem gambling,” said Minister for Gaming Michael O’Brien in a statement.

Traditional forms of gambling have long been the focus of anti-gambling messages.

A program launched in Bendigo in February saw a welfare agency take to gaming venues in a bid to teach staff how to identify and help potential problem gamblers.

But the prevalence of online outlets means many are staying at home to punt in private.

It’s those people this new campaign hopes to reach.

Residents in some regional cities like Ballarat, while below the national average for gambling losses, are still losing big money, up to $100 million per year collectively.

The city of Horsham is set to become the first rural municipality in western Victoria to adopt a formal stance on gambling.

Council is conducting research in its efforts to shape its formal opinion on gambling venues and pokies which will be put out to public comment.

Mr O'Brien said the timing of the launch was deliberate, to coincide with the Spring Racing Carnival and AFL finals.

Advertising will appear on television, newspapers and radio and trams and trains.
