Police seize $20 million ice stash

22 Jan, 2010 09:11 AM
Two men will appear in court today after a $20 million stash of the drug "ice" was allegedly found packed into car parts in western Sydney.

The 50kg haul of crystal methamphetamine had been sent from China to Melbourne earlier this month and was delivered to an address at Glendenning, in western Sydney, yesterday.

Australian Federal Police officers followed the package on its journey from Melbourne and raided the Glendenning address as one of the men was allegedly unpacking the ice from the car parts.

"It is estimated the 50 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine seized yesterday is valued at approximately $20 million," AFP Sydney manager Commander David J Stewart said.

"This quantity of methamphetamine is capable of producing about 50,000 street deals."

Police arrested the man at Glendenning and arrested the other man a short time later at Sydney Airport, just as he was about to leave Australia.

A 47-year-old Chinese man and a 31-year-old man from Hong Kong were both charged with one count each of trafficking a commercial quantity of the drug.

The maximum penalty for that offence is life imprisonment.

They were due to appear at Central Local Court today.

Our punishment for this sort of crime is far too soft. Pity the Death penalty is not available.

I agree - why should Aus taxpayers have to pay for these "killers" to have a roof over their head, access to education and modern comforts inside, and 3 squares a day for the rest of their lives?
