Horsham to host cricket tournament

YOUNG cricketers from across the state will converge on Horsham today for the under-15 Junior Country Week.

Horsham Cricket Association junior cricket co-ordinator Darren Chesterfield said Horsham, Warrnambool, Portland, Mt Gambier, Hamilton, Wimmera-Mallee and South West cricket associations would all enter teams in the event.

He said more than 100 players would take part.

Mr Chesterfield said the matches would all be played in Horsham for the tournament.

He said in previous years they were also played in Dimboola but its oval was not up to scratch.

He said there were different plans in place in case of hot weather.

"Hopefully it's a good week," he said.

"I would think Horsham's team will be competitive, but generally speaking Mt Gambier and Warrnambool are the strong teams."

Mr Chesterfield said the grand final would be on Friday at Horsham City Oval.

He thanked Horsham Rural City Council for allowing the use of City Oval from Wednesday.

Mr Chesterfield said other matches would be at Dudley Cornell Park, Sunnyside and Dimboola Road ovals.
