Warrnambool as good as Gold

WARRNAMBOOL Gold has made an unbeaten start to its Warrnambool Junior Under-17 County Week division one campaign with two impressive victories.

Warrnambool produced a crushing opening-day victory over West Wimmera before rolling Wimmera-Mallee for just 12 runs yesterday.

Gold batted first and posted 7-193 thanks to the batting heroics of Adam Sell, 75 not out, and captain Ben Threlfall, 46. Brodie Cramer, Todd Alexander and Jake Preston each took two wickets for division one newcomers West Wimmera.

In response, the visitors struggled in their run chase against a disciplined Warrnambool bowling attack.

Seven of Gold's nine bowlers took wickets, with Josh Lock, 2-8, the stand-out.

West Wimmera fell 91 runs short of its target, finishing on 8-102 after 50 overs.

Shaun Smith, 22, and Cramer, 21, both made starts but failed to press on.

Wimmera-Mallee looked in the hunt for a second win in as many days after bowling its opponents for 44.

But the Warrnambool bowlers had other ideas, with Conner Richardson, 4-2, and Lock, 3-0, causing the damage.

In the other group A day one fixture, Wimmera-Mallee annihilated Horsham.

Wimmera-Mallee's total of 8-119 proved a difficult one for the Horsham batsmen to chase.

Horsham was rolled for just 55, with skipper and Western Waves representative Angus Adams, 27, the only player to reach double-figures.

The points were shared in yesterday's match between Horsham and West Wimmera after heavy rain saw the game called off late in the afternoon.

Horsham was 5-82 chasing 211 for victory, with Jacob O'Beirne finishing on 27 not out.
