Man bailed after allegedly holding knife to woman's throat

A HORSHAM man who allegedly held a hunting knife to his pregnant partner's throat is on bail.

Warren Robert Anthony, 36, sat in the dock in Horsham Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

His charges include possession of a controlled weapon, false imprisonment, having recklessly caused injury, two counts of unlawful assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, five counts of having breached an intervention order and two counts of theft.

Magistrate Peter Mealy heard evidence led by the defence and granted Anthony bail with conditions.

Anthony must undergo drug rehabilitation treatment at Melbourne's Raymond Hader Clinic.

Addiction clinician specialist Jason Quigley told the court that police would be called if Anthony absconded or failed to complete the program.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Michael Patterson told the court about numerous allegations of domestic violence against Anthony.

He alleged that Anthony committed multiple acts of violence against his partner, including emotional and physical abuse, between November 12 and December 17.

Anthony allegedly called his partner obscene, derogatory names on several occasions.

Leading Senior Constable Patterson also alleged that Anthony held his partner down, hit her head, including banging her head into a wall and threatened her with a large hunting knife which had a 25-centimetre blade.

Anthony's partner sustained cuts and abrasions on her arms, legs and back and went to Wimmera Base Hospital. Leading Senior Constable Patterson said that during the hunting knife incident, Anthony grabbed his partner, forced her onto his lap and held a knife to her throat.

He said Anthony told his frightened partner to 'shut up and keep quiet'.

Leading Senior Constable Patterson said the woman was pregnant with Anthony's child so she tried to protect her stomach during the assault.

He said Anthony also hit his own head against a door and told police his partner had assaulted him.

Mr Quigley told the court Anthony's substance abuse history included him using 1.7 to 3.5 grams of heroin a day, 0.5 to 1 gram of methamphetamines a day and drinking from 20 to 50 or more standard drinks in a day. Anthony will face court again on March 6.
