TRADING
THE SKINNY: Used its start-up concessions and its hold on the 17-year-old mini draft to stockpile draft picks and build for the long-term future. Deals involving West Australians Jesse Hogan and Jack Martin left the Giants with the top three choices in this year's draft. Overall, the Giants will enter the draft with five first-round selections. There were suggestions that the Giants would use a high pick to lure a key player from another club but that did not eventuate. However a late deal, involving an exchange of draft picks and the loss of Jed Anderson, brought former Hawks premiership defender Stephen Gilham to the club, where he will get far greater opportunities.
VERDICT: A bit hard to call. Stephen Silvagni's master plan means the Giants will have 25 first-round draft picks on their list once this draft is over. They hope this will be the basis for their eventual first premiership but the immediate future will be about avoiding the second-year blues and grooming coach-in-waiting Leon Cameron.
DRAFT PICKS: 1, 2, 3, 12, 14, 28, 65, 69, 86, 104, 122
NATIONAL DRAFT
1. LACHIE WHITFIELD (Dandenong Stingrays, 18, 184cm, 74kg)
Versatile midfielder who has football smarts and can turn games with his precise skills. Also boasts natural speed and is a strong mark.
2. JONATHAN O'ROURKE (Calder Cannons, 18, 183cm, 75kg)
Winger with an element of class. Speedy and gets enough of the ball, but his best attribute is his brilliant kicking.
3. LACHIE PLOWMAN (Calder Cannons, 18, 191cm, 86kg)
Tall backman considered the best defender in the draft pool. Had an injury-interrupted year but is smart with ball in hands and close-checking without.
12. KRISTIAN JAKSCH (Oakleigh Chargers, 18, 194cm, 85kg)
Key-position player who is extremely strong overhead but also a good spoiler when used in defence. Good vision and decision-maker.
14. AIDAN CORR (Northern Knights, 18, 194cm, 80kg)
Tall defender who is aggressive at the ball and a good spoiler. Has good pace and is effective disposing of the ball by foot.
27. JAMES STEWART (Sandringham Dragons, 18, 197cm, 82kg)
Tall forward with outstanding agility and assured with the ball in hand. Was eligible for father-son selection to Collingwood, where his dad, Craig, played 115 games.
67. Pass
83. SAM FROST (Greater Western Sydney, 19, 194cm, 92kg)
Key-position prospect who played three games late in 2012 until injury ended his season. Elevated off the rookie list.
97. ANDREW PHILLIPS (Greater Western Sydney, 21, 202cm, 93kg)
Ruckman is promoted to the primary list after a handful of senior games in 2012. Made his debut in the Giants' maiden AFL win, over Gold Coast in round seven.
PRE-SEASON/ROOKIE DRAFTS
Bret Thornton (No.1, pre-season), Dean Brogan (No.12, pre-season), Jack Redfern (No.51, rookie), Zachary Williams (No.54, rookie)
The fledgling side needs all the big bodies and experience it can get and so will surely get plenty more use out of Thornton, who could find himself beside another ex-Blue, Setanta O'hAilpin, in the Giants backline. Brogan was cut with the intention of making a place for Tippett and so was re-drafted when the ex-Crow's asking price was out of the Suns' reach.
