Nichola Clarke's exhibition 'Wimmera Tales' at Horsham Regional Art Gallery inspired a family fun day on Sunday.
Gallery director Adam Harding said 45 children attended with parents.
"The day was a great opportunity to demonstrate really simple art techniques and have children work together with their families," he said.
Mr Harding said Clarke's exhibition included many paintings of dogs, and children participated in dog-related activities.
"Visitors had the option of making a three-dimensional dog picture and creating their own family story by copying elements of the paintings,'' he said.
"There was a treasure hunt, where children answered questions about the paintings."
Visitors also made a three-dimensional model of May Park, which was based on Clarke's painting of May Park at the 2009 Art is... Festival.
Mr Harding said there was a great turnout for the family fun day and the gallery was looking forward to organising another family day later in the year.
