MY boyfriend and I are having troubles.
Not between us, luckily, but with something that should have been so easy.
It started innocently enough.
A strong desire to explore the world, to meet people of all kinds and to discover new things convinced us both we needed to book a Contiki holiday, as soon as possible.
We discussed it, we talked about our finances - or in my case, lack of - and we headed to the travel agent.
At this stage our cheeks were flushed with excitement and our eyes were bright with possibilities.
Oh, it was early days yet.
At the start, everything seemed so easy.
We quickly chose a location - Europe - and decided when - in August - without difficulty.
When my boyfriend proposed which Contiki he thought we should do, I shouted yes and our lives took a new turn.
And there we found ourselves, at the travel agent with wallets in one hand and a passport in his other hand - I had the sense to know we wouldn't need a passport to actually book the trip.
The travel agent was lovely and took us through everything.
Having visited Europe once before, I nodded knowingly every time she mentioned Italy or Paris.
It was all going well... and then she mentioned them.
The flights.
I've flown internationally with only one airline before and loved it.
I was convinced there was no other option.
My boyfriend works with people from all around the world and also has strong views.
It was an uncertain time and we hit our first bump.
We left the agency with our heads buzzing with airline options and extras and prices.
We didn't broach the subject for a while - instead letting the haze of paying part of a Contiki in Europe dazzle us instead.
Lately though, we've given looking into flights another go.
Last week, we took it a step further and actually selected which ones we wanted.
But at the weekend, tragedy struck - the flights had increased in price by more than $600 overnight.
Our hearts broke and we sank into a deep depression that I've been trying to cure all week by eating copious amounts of chocolate.
Now we're stuck in a love-hate relationship - both of us loving the idea of travelling but hating the lack of structure when it comes to airline charges.
We're yet to make a decision and suddenly Europe and August both seem to be darkened by a stormy cloud called aeroplane fuel costs driving up prices.
Has anyone got the costs of a boat to Europe instead?
