THE 11th annual Horsham and District Relay for Life could smash the million-dollar target this year.

The relay raised a record $112,000 for the Cancer Council of Victoria last year and took the region's total to $950,000 raised in 10 years.

Committee chairman Kingsley Dalgleish said a record number of teams and a district raffle would help it successfully reach the target.

He said the event would start with an opening ceremony at 5.40pm.

Mr Dalgleish said survivors and carers would walk the first lap, followed by a whole-team lap. The official lap-counting will start on the third lap.

Mr Dalgleish said a highlight of the Relay for Life was at 9pm when a candlelight ceremony gave people a chance to pay tribute to a loved one with cancer.

"It's a special moment,'' he said. "There will be a minute's silence, then a lone piper.''

Candles will be on sale from 5pm. Mr Dalgleish encouraged people to buy candles at the event to support the cause.

He said there would be activities such as midnight madness throughout the night to keep teams enthusiastic and energised.

Mr Dalgleish encouraged people to attend the event and donate to teams.
