Wimmera Netball Association team aims for state league title

WIMMERA Netball Association's 17-and-under side is one win away from claiming the inaugural Central Highlands Regional State League title.

The undefeated Wimmera side takes on Eureka in Sunday's decider at Wendouree Netball Centre for a chance to cap off a stellar season on the court.

Coach Gayle Leith said it had been a fairytale season and, win or lose, the competition was a massive success for netball in the region.

"I think the competition has been a great benefit to the association and it will flow through to all the clubs," she said. "It's not just the players who will benefit from competing - we've had four umpires on average umpire each week which has been another bonus."

Leith said she could not be happier with how the team had played throughout the competition and Wimmera would be a worthy winner of the 17-and-under crown.

"They're just a lovely group of young sporting ambassadors whom anyone would be pleased to be involved with," she said.

"The support that this group of girls give to each other is just fantastic.

"We've got girls who want to be there and are wanting to learn and improve their netball.

"The senior side should also be proud of what they've achieved."

The Katelyn Parry-captained junior side has won all of its matches leading into the finale, including a massive 57-goal victory over Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League on Friday.

The open grand final will be played between Ballarat and Eureka after Wimmera's open side lost its preliminary final match to Eureka by three goals.
