Clinching gold! Kate and Will hug for Britain

Thank goodness for Team GB's cycling gold - with spirits running high, Chris Hoy's marvellous finish was not only a chance for a collective sigh of relief across Britain but a prime-time opportunity to witness a royal PDA of epic proportions.

Up until now, we've seen the odd hand-hold, the arm looped around a narrow waist, the steadying arm when disembarking a Canadian boat last July. We've cooed over the balcony kiss - the cherry on the wedding day icing, no less - and we've admired the consistency of The Duchess's open smile.

But it took Hoy and his teammates to elicit the couple's Mexican waves, nail-biting nerves and the final, raucous cheer and celebratory hug, a genuine and wholesome clinch that we could never have dreamt seeing a royal diving into just a decade or two ago.

And, rivalry aside, we all loved it.

And the crowd goes wild!

Stiff upper lips are dropped as they go for the hug...

...And the gold is secured.
