KANIVA-LEEOR United fell short of the season-finish it hoped for, going down to Penola by 58 points in the final home and away match of the Kowree-Naracoorte-Tatiara season on Saturday.
The Cougars looked the goods early, booting 2.4 in the first quarter to the home team's 1.4.
But the lead did not last long, with Penola kicking six goals in the second term and holding the Cougars scoreless.
Trevor Albrecht's men showed fight in the third term, kicking two goals and keeping Penola to three, but by three-quarter-time the margin was out to 46 points.
Penola kicked five goals to the Cougars' three in the final term to seal the win.
Penola's key forward Adam Merrett continued his dominant form, booting five goals.
Paul Adlington was a stand-out for the Cougars, kicking three goals and being named best afield.
The Cougars finished the season in seventh spot two games behind sixth-placed Border Districts.
In other KNTFL matches, Naracoorte beat Lucindale 99-49, Padthaway was victorious against Kingston 98-64, Kybybolite won against Border Districts 126-74 and Bordertown downed Mundulla 105-68 to pinch top spot on the ladder from Keith, which had the bye.
