AT least 10 of the record 12 candidates vying for the federal seat of Mallee will join in tonight's Mallee Rally at Wesley Performing Arts Centre in Horsham.
The number of candidates is the highest since the electorate was established in the 1940s.
Labor's Lydia Senior will stand against Liberal Chris Crewther and The Nationals' Andrew Broad.
They are joined by Independent Allen Ridgeway, Country Alliance's Michael Coldham, Family First candidate Neil Buller and The Greens' Jane MacAllister.
Citizens Electoral Council's Chris Lahy, Rise Up Australia's Tim Middleton, Katter's Australian Party's Vince Cirillo, United Australia Party's Mark Cory and the Australian Sex Party's Amy Mulcahy round out the field of candidates.
Rally moderator and former Weekly Times journalist Peter Hunt said he was looking forward to helping voters hear the answers they wanted from the candidates.
"Mallee electorate faces major challenges. Where are the future jobs and industries?" he said. "The population is ageing, so how do we attract young people into the region and afford to maintain health, education and community services?
"Regional Australia is being offered Band-Aid solutions. Where are the big picture solutions that will drive vibrant, strong communities across the Mallee?
"We will be asking the candidates for vision rather than rhetoric, and detail rather than generalisations."
Wimmera Press Club is hosting the event, which is supported by Wimmera Development Association.
The association's executive officer, Jo Bourke, urged voters to attend the event to hear what candidates had on offer.
"Whether it be roads, mobile coverage, health, education or agriculture, we need voters to come and join in this historic event," she said.
"After all these years of being the safest federal Coalition seat in Australia, it is a great chance to find out what candidates can bring to the table."
The debate will start at 7pm.
Mrs Bourke said people could offer questions they wanted candidates to answer by emailing email@example.com or bring them on the night.
