The North Ballarat Rebels-listed ruckman, 18, hit his head on the ground after an incident late in the first half in the Burras' 45-point loss at Horsham City Oval.
Minyip-Murtoa Football Club has called for a Wimmera Football League investigation into the incident, which resulted in Coleman having a seizure.
Burras president Andy Delahunty said he also wanted to look into an incident that happened moments before, which involved on-baller Angus Trethowan. "We're calling for the two incidents to be looked at," he said.
"We believe the nature of Matt's injury and the seriousness of it warrants an investigation.
"We've definitely got a duty of care here for our players."
Coleman's mother, Wally Coleman, said her son has had to take anticonvulsant medication and would be unable to drive for six months following the incident.
"His concentration is really poor, he's not tolerating light well and he can't remember anything from the match," she said.
"He's more orientated than when he got into hospital, but he tires quickly."
When asked if he would play football again, Mrs Coleman said she wasn't sure.
"He's an 18-year-old fit, clean guy and a quality player," she said.
"But who knows whether he'll play football next year it depends how he goes with his concentration.
"It's not the short-term it's the long term. He's not going to get better in a week."
Horsham Saints president Roger Sordello said he was confident there was nothing untoward in the incident and all his players had the club's full support during the investigation.
"It was just an unfortunate incident, which looked ugly after the event," he said. "We understand Minyip-Murtoa's stance there's a young guy in hospital as a result of it.
"We really wish that Matt makes a speedy recovery." Western Vic Football manager Stephen McQueen confirmed he had received paperwork and an investigating officer had 21 days to complete the case.
Any possible suspensions will not take effect until after this year's WFL grand final on September 21.
